FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) and

Junior FIRST LEGO® League (Jr.FLL)

Our SAIC/Westbriar Business-School Partnership with funding assistance from BAE Systems is sponsoring one FLL and four Junior FLL teams at Westbriar

What is FIRST® LEGO® League?

FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” These programs are designed to inspire students by helping them become excited about science, engineering and technology.

FIRST® LEGO® League for Grades 4-6

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a hands-on program for grades 4-6 which introduces students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams of up to 8 students, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and learn to make positive contributions to society.

They get to:

·      Design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology

·      Apply real-world math and science concepts

·      Research challenges facing today’s scientists

·      Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills

·      Participate in tournaments and celebrations

Junior FIRST® LEGO® League for Grades K-3

Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL) is a hands-on program for grades K-3 introduces the youngest students to the exciting worlds of science and technology. Just like FLL, this program features a real-world challenge, to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches, students in teams of up to 6 students, work with LEGO elements and moving parts to create solutions and present them for review. Younger elementary school students get to:

  •  Design and build challenge solutions using LEGO elements
  •  Apply real-world math and science concept
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Learn team-building and presentation skills
  • Develop Show-Me posters

Westbriar will have four teams of children ranging from grades 1 to 3 as part of this year's Junior LEGO League. The challenge for 2011/2012 is called Snack Attack. Participants will spend six weeks learning about food safety and inventing something they can use to promote healthy eating or to help keep the food they eat safe. The teams will present their builds to parents, teachers, and other students. This is the second year we are offering Jr FLL at Westbriar after having such a successful trial run last year. We are hoping for another great year and look to expand to 6 teams next year.

As of September 18, 2011, this program is FULL.
