Westbriar Elementary School PTA

public speaking

Grades 2-3

Offered by Fairfax Collegiate. This course teaches students to be comfortable and confident when speaking in front of an audience in a variety of formats. Respect for fellow students is emphasized to help ensure that every student speaks at each meeting. Students start with games and exercises to gain familiarity in front of an audience, and they learn proper public speaking skills like body language, voice projection, and eye contact. Students then practice these skills individually and in teams by delivering speeches, presentations, and interviews, while their audience practices active listening techniques. Finally, students learn how to develop well reasoned and cohesive arguments, and they learn persuasive techniques to strengthen their public speaking abilities. This is a 90-minute class.
